Six Sacred Temples of Lord Ayyappa

Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple

The most sacred and world-renowned shrine of Lord Ayyappa, attracting millions of devotees annually, especially during Mandala and Makaravilakku seasons.

Pandalam Valiya Koyikkal Temple

Associated with the royal family where Lord Ayyappa spent his childhood. The procession carrying the Thiruvabharanam to Sabarimala starts from here.

Kulathupuzha Sastha Temple

In this temple Lord Ayyappa is worshipped as Bala Sastha (child form). Located beside a river, the Vishu festival is celebrated grandly here.

Aryankavu Sastha Temple

Ayyappa is worshipped in a serene form here. The temple is known for its unique Kerala-Tamil architecture blend and the famous Thiruvathira festival.

Erumeli Sree Dharma Sastha Temple

A major pilgrim stop on the way to Sabarimala. Famous for the historic Pettathullal ritual symbolizing the victory over Mahishi and unity among devotees.

Achankovil Sastha Temple

One of the oldest temples where Ayyappa is worshipped with consorts Purna and Pushkala. It is believed the deity here has healing powers.

Mandala Pooja

Mandala Pooja (Mandala Kalam)

Duration: 41 days (Mid-November to late December)
The most important festival where devotees observe 41 days of vratham and visit Sabarimala. The temple remains open throughout this sacred period.

Makaravilakku / Makarajyothi

Date: January 14 (Makara Sankranti)
Marks the end of Mandala-Makaravilakku season. The Thiruvabharanam procession from Pandalam Palace arrives, and lakhs gather to witness the divine Makarajyothi at Ponnambalamedu.

Aarattu Festival

Time: During the concluding day of festivals like Mandala Pooja & Makaravilakku
Aarattu is the sacred ritual bath of Lord Ayyappa. The idol is taken in procession to River Pampa where the Aarattu ceremony is performed, marking the ceremonial conclusion of the festival period.
